Puri is the big one — Kolkata’s default beach destination for generations. The Jagannath Temple, the long flat beach, the fresh seafood, the specific atmosphere of a Hindu pilgrimage town that’s also somehow a beach resort. It shouldn’t work as well as it does, but it does.
Why go
The Jagannath Temple (12th century, one of the four dhams of Hinduism) is the reason Puri exists. Non-Hindus cannot enter — but the gopuram (gateway tower) and the surrounding religious ecology of the town are interesting regardless. The Rath Yatra festival in July-August is one of the largest religious gatherings in India.
The beach is long, flat, and reliably good for sunrise. The eastern section (toward Swargadwar) is busy and commercial; walk north toward Pentakota for quiet.
The seafood is the main argument for Puri over other beaches. Fresh pomfret, prawn, crab — cooked simply by the beach shacks or more carefully in the guesthouses. The specific Odia preparation (lighter spice, more coastal) is worth experiencing.
The train strategy
Puri is far but the overnight train makes it a genuine weekend. Leave Kolkata Friday night (10–11pm trains), arrive Puri Saturday morning, full Saturday + Sunday on the beach, overnight train Sunday night back to Kolkata Monday morning. You’ve had a complete weekend without taking leave.
Where to stay
Marine Drive area is the right base — walking distance to the beach and temple, central for the town. Budget guesthouses start at ₹800 (acceptable). Mid-range (₹2,000–3,500) gets you air conditioning and decent breakfast. The heritage hotels (₹5,000+) are worth it for a special occasion.
What to eat
The fish thalis at the spots on CT Road (Marine Drive) are the benchmark. Order whatever the catch is that morning. Chhena poda (the Odia baked cheese dessert) and the rasagola (Odisha’s own version, different from Kolkata’s) are the mandatory sweets.
