Getting There (No Car Needed)
Train from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then shared jeep to Kurseong (~2 hours) or the toy train (stops at Kurseong on the way to Darjeeling). Kurseong is mid-way on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway route — you can get off here instead of going all the way to Darjeeling.
Where to Stay
Heritage bungalow / homestay · ₹1,500–5,000 per night
Kurseong is the hill station that Darjeeling visitors drive through without stopping. Which is a mistake. At 1,458m (lower than Darjeeling’s 2,042m), it has a milder climate, significantly fewer tourists, and the most accessible working tea estates in the region — some will let you walk through the gardens and watch plucking without an appointment.
Why Kurseong instead of Darjeeling
Lower altitude = warmer. Less developed = quieter. The town is genuinely lived-in in a way that Darjeeling’s tourist belt no longer is. The market area around Motor Stand has the local life of a Himalayan sub-town that Darjeeling’s Mall Road doesn’t anymore.
The tea estate access is the other argument. Makaibari, Ambotia, Castleton — estates that are names in the serious tea world — are here or nearby. Makaibari in particular runs farm stays and tastings.
What to do
Makaibari Tea Estate: The oldest tea estate in Darjeeling (est. 1859), now partly run as a farm stay. Walk through the estate, watch plucking in season (spring flush March-April, second flush May-June), do the tasting. Book in advance.
Eagle’s Craig viewpoint: The best viewpoint near town. Clear mornings give Kanchenjunga views.
Toy Train (just the section): Even if you’re not going to Darjeeling, the Kurseong section of the toy train — including the famous Agony Point loop — can be done as a day experience from town.
St. Mary’s Hill: Historic church with a quiet churchyard. The view from here in the morning is excellent.
Where to stay
The heritage bungalows (former British planters’ residences) are the experience here — Cochrane Place and Makaibari farmstay are the anchors. Book well ahead.
