Getting There (No Car Needed)
Overnight train from Kolkata (Sealdah) to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) — Darjeeling Mail or Padatik Express, ~10 hours. From NJP, take the UNESCO-heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) for the experience (~7 hours, book well in advance) or a shared jeep (3–4 hours) for practicality. Jeeps are cheaper and faster; the toy train is the reason.

Darjeeling needs no introduction, and probably doesn’t need to be on a “hidden gems” list. But it belongs on any serious Kolkata weekend destination guide because the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (the Toy Train) alone is one of the great travel experiences in eastern India, and the combination of tea estates, Himalayan views, and colonial hill-station architecture is still unmatched.
The Toy Train is the point
The narrow-gauge steam railway climbing from Siliguri to Darjeeling was built in 1881 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey through tea gardens, tiny stations, and switchbacks where the train reverses direction to gain altitude takes 7 hours. Take it at least one way — book tickets weeks in advance, especially in season.
What to do
Tiger Hill at 4am: The pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill for Kanchenjunga sunrise is mandatory. Yes, it’s 4am. Yes, you’re getting in a jeep in the cold. The view of Kanchenjunga (third-highest peak in the world) turning pink at sunrise is the image you came for. Check clear-sky forecasts before going.
Tea tasting at a garden: Happy Valley Tea Estate is 2 km from town and does factory tours and tastings. The second-flush Darjeeling (May-June) is the famous one; the muscatel character is distinctive and unlike any tea you’ve had.
Batasia Loop: The toy train makes a circular loop here with a war memorial and garden. The best photographic spot on the railway.
Mahakal Temple + Observatory Hill: Short walk from Mall Road. The Buddhist prayer flags and the view from the temple hill give a sense of the town’s Tibetan-Nepali-Bengali cultural layering.
Where to stay
The heritage hotels (Windamere, Elgin) are the experience of Old Darjeeling — worth splurging for a special trip. Mid-range guesthouses on or near Mall Road are good value. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for the October-November and March-May windows.
Practical notes
Altitude is ~2,000m. Acclimatize on arrival day — don’t rush. The weather is changeable; clouds can hide the mountains for days. The March-May spring season has the best combination of clear skies and mild temperature.
