Bakkhali is the budget beach that Kolkata barely talks about — because it doesn’t need to advertise. It’s a wide, grey-sand beach at the edge of the Sundarbans delta, near Henry’s Island, with a mangrove forest fringe and almost no commercial development.

Why go

It’s not a party beach. It’s not a resort beach. It’s a beach at the edge of where the Gangetic delta meets the Bay of Bengal, with all the atmospheric weight that implies. The sea here is brown (sediment from the Ganga), the horizon is flat, and at low tide the beach extends for what feels like half a kilometer.

Henry’s Island, accessible by boat from Bakkhali, has a crocodile breeding center and is the departure point for Sundarbans day trips. The combination of beach + mangrove + wildlife in one overnight trip is the value proposition.

What to do

Walk the beach at sunrise — the fishermen are bringing in catches and the light on the flat water is excellent. Hire a boat to Henry’s Island (negotiate at the jetty, ₹100–200 per person in a shared boat). Visit the forest range office if you want to arrange a deeper Sundarbans entry.

Where to eat

The seafood here is extremely fresh and extremely cheap. Any of the beach-adjacent shacks will serve prawn curry and fish that came out of the water that morning. Don’t expect presentation — expect flavor.

Practical notes

Swimming is not recommended — the currents are strong and the seafloor drops steeply. Bakkhali is a beach for walking, not swimming. The hotel options are basic; book ahead on weekends from October to February.
