Strand Road, Maidan
Prinsep Ghat
A Gothic-classical monument on the Hooghly — Kolkata's most photogenic riverside spot, especially at dusk when the city's skyline and the bridge light up together.
Best Time to Visit
Evening — arrive 30 minutes before sunset. The ghat faces west across the Hooghly; the light at golden hour is exceptional.
Nearest Landmark
Victoria Memorial, Strand Road
How to Get There
Strand Road, south of the Howrah Bridge. Take a cab or auto to Prinsep Ghat. Open all day, free entry. The riverside promenade extends north toward Babughat.
Local Tip
"You can hire a rowboat from the ghat for a river view of the bridge and the city — bargain the price before boarding (₹100–200 for a short round trip). The area gets pleasant post-6pm when the temperature drops and Kolkata families come out. On weekends there are food stalls. Walk north along the Strand promenade for 20 minutes to reach Babughat."
Prinsep Ghat is named after James Prinsep, the orientalist and antiquary who deciphered the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts — effectively unlocking the history of ancient India. The monument erected in his memory (1843) is an elegant Gothic arch with Corinthian columns, sitting at the river’s edge.
The riverside
The ghat itself — steps leading down to the Hooghly — is a working river access point, but the aesthetic appeal is in the composition: the monument framed against the river, the Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge) in the middle distance, and on clear evenings, a sunset that turns everything gold.
What to do here
Sit on the steps and watch the river. Take a rowboat out. Walk the promenade. Come in the evening when the whole waterfront softens and the bridge lights come on.
Not technically hidden
This one is on the standard Kolkata circuit, but it belongs on the list because first-time visitors often skip it for Victoria Memorial or the Howrah Bridge and miss what is genuinely one of the most beautiful spots in the city.
