How to Get There

Enter from Park Street, just west of the Park Hotel. The gate is easy to miss — look for the small green door set into the boundary wall. Free entry.

Local Tip

"Pick up a small guide booklet at the gate (sometimes available, sometimes not). Look for the tomb of Rose Aylmer — the woman who inspired one of Walter Savage Landor's most famous poems. The scale of the pyramid tombs is genuinely shocking — some are four storeys tall."

The Park Street Cemetery opened in 1767, making it one of the oldest maintained European cemeteries outside Europe. What you find inside is unlike anything else in Kolkata.

What’s here

The tombs are extraordinary objects. Enormous pyramids, obelisks, rotundas, and classical temples — all built to a scale that seems designed to outlast the empire itself. The vegetation has grown up around them over two and a half centuries, creating a peculiar, beautiful effect: Gothic stonework half-consumed by roots and banyan trees, mausolea emerging from undergrowth, the whole thing in a state of managed but not defeated decay.

The people buried here are a cross-section of early colonial Calcutta — merchants, soldiers, administrators, wives who didn’t survive the Bengal climate. The inscriptions are literature: elaborate, formal, grief-stricken.

Why it’s worth your time

It’s free, it’s quiet, and it contains more genuine history per square metre than most museums. The contrast with the chaos of Park Street outside the wall is absolute — step through the gate and the noise stops completely.

The Asiatic Society of Bengal and the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia have done significant restoration work here. The condition is far better than you’d expect.
